Over Now

I knew the winning streak couldn't last. I'm not a competitive player but it was cool to see Tyranids doing alright :) At least now I don't have to worry about keeping it up and can go back to my regular 40k ways of losing a lot, lol.

Joe H from Perry came up last night and beat my Tyranids with his guard at 1,500 pts. We played the fourth mission (fast attack slots are scoring, six objectives with point values on each). He managed to get the four pointer and a 3 pointer in his deployment zone. His list looked like:

1,500 pts
  • 20 guardsmen with platoon command
  • 10 vets with melta bombs and meltas, chimera
  • Company command squad with the reserve thing
  • mortar squad
  • lascannon squad
  • missile launcher squad
  • leman russ
  • leman russ
  • vendetta
  • vendetta

Newly painted Gargoyles move up the right flank with Overlord Muggis
I managed to run his company command squad off in the top of turn two with carnifex shots so he wouldn't get the reserve bonuses and outflank bonuses. I shot up a ton of other stuff and got stuck in on the right flank with my gargoyles. They performed terribly against guardsmen... ugh.

His vendettas came in and killed my hive tyrant in one turn. 285 points gone from one vendetta (135 points). Ugh. The gargoyles stayed in combat with the guardsmen on the right flank for a while and my tervigons spawned enough gants to hold my back objectives. I was planning for victory in turn six, but we went to turn seven and it went bad. I was holding enough objectives to win at the bottom of turn seven, but his vets ran up to my tervigon and beat it up with melta bombs (ugh) and it died.

He managed to take down my Carnifexes with the vendettas and leman russes but not before I took out a LR and a vendetta, plus a bunch of dudes on the ground with twin linked devourer shots. I used Endurance to my advantage on the Carnifexes.

I killed the following:
  • 20 guardsmen
  • Company command squad with the reserve thing
  • lascannon squad
  • missile launcher squad
  • leman russ
  • vendetta
So he had vets, a platoon commander, a mortar squad, a Leman Russ, and a vendetta left. He managed to hold the four point objective with ONE dude (the platoon commander) and the three pointer with his mortar squad. All I had left on the board at the end were termagants. When the game goes seven turns it is really hard for Tyranids. Anything above five turns, really.

It was a well fought, close, cinematic game. I think it shows a few glaring things about Sixth Edition: bring skyfire if you can, because vendettas will bend you over, flying MCs aren't nearly invincible, and infantry can take down MCs really easily.

What would I have done differently? Probably killed the mortar squad with my carnifex instead of the vendetta so they couldn't hold the three point objective. Probably not charged the sentinels with my tervigon because it took forever to take them down even with smash attacks (forgot my damn Hammer of Wrath attack, forgot in the first round I could re-roll the pen chart).

There is a ton of stuff to remember in sixth edition. I know I'll get it soon but man if I didn't forget a few things here and there.

  2. Also, Josh won yesterday on camera, so that streak is over. Now we just need someone on their birthday to beat Maelstorm to end that streak!

As long as everyone is having fun, I don't care if I win or lose. :)
