The Best Assault Unit in 6th Edition?

Some of the early feedback on 6th edition is that is has become more of a "shooting game".  However, I believe there is still room for dedicated assault units.  For my first 6th edition hobby project, I have been busy painting up my Death Company models. I bought some back when the kit just came out and added some used models later.

I had also modeled up a Death Company dreadnought since it is awesome.  For me, DC didn't see too much table time in 5th edition due to the Rage USR. Hence, they sat unpainted in my case for quite some time.  However, since Rage is much better in 6th edition I have been trying them out again. I have been taking them with a Land Raider Crusader and the requisite Reclusiarch/Chaplain attached.  So far, they absolutely destroyed anything they managed to successfully charge.  However, taking nine of them has seemed like overkill.

While not as survivable as some of more popular assault death stars (Paladins, Thunderwolf Cavalry, Assault Terminators, etc), I would argue that not much in the game can withstand an assault by DC with a Chaplain attached.  More importantly however, the models themselves are awesome looking!  The DC kit has so many options, no two marines look the same.  Painting these models has been as challenging as painting my Space Hulk Terminators.  These models are covered with blood drop gems, purity seals, vials of blood, and Blood Angels icons.  I managed to get five out of the eleven I have assembled painted up.   Painting black is a bit forgiving, but doing the edge highlights with grey takes a lot of patience.

Of course, taking five DC unlocks the awesome dreadnought option. So far he has been riding in style arriving via Storm Raven.  I have decided that Blood Talons are usually overkill and have been just running Blood Fists for now.  I still have the Forge World arms on him though for coolness.
After I get the rest of the DC models painted, I plan on working on their ride.  I have had this un-assembled Land Raider sitting on my shelf from last year's Ard Boyz first round win.  I picked up Forge World Land Raider doors, a Crusader/Redeemer sprue, and a LR Terminus set.  I plan on magnetizing up this baby and decking it out in full Death Company colors.
Of course another option is to run them with jump packs.   This is expensive, but I did magnetize the backpacks so I could have the option.  Of course, if I am going to spend that many points, I might as well bring Astorath the Grim to really have a mobile unit with a lot of punch.

Stay tuned for my next update to show off the fully painted unit of eleven as well as their sweet DC Land Raider.   Thanks for viewing!

  1. I think they're pretty sweet. I'd like to put them up against a Swarmlord deathstar sometime.

  3. Why didn't you field them before, if they were your favorite unit?

    1. I really hated the fact I couldn't control them. Once in a while I would have put them in a LRC and drove them around, but it was frustrating.

  5. According the the rumor mill, Berzerkers are going to get the Rage USR as well. So I can maybe quit complaining about how the Blood Angels can out-assault a pure Khorne World Eaters army.
