Year in Review Day 2 - Tau4Eva: Games, Games, and More Games!

This was a banner year for me in the wargaming hobby. I managed to play more Warhammer 40k than ever. In addition to all that WH40K, I played multiple new and old game systems. 2011 was also the year I started writing articles for gaming blogs.

Going full circle in my wargaming hobby, I played in Cerberus' Battletech campaign this year. Battletech was the game that introduced me to table top wargaming and the nostalgia I felt playing it again was great. It was nice to dig out some of my old battlemechs and put some fresh paint on them.

I bought the big Fantasy 8th edition rules in November 2010 and started collecting a Dark Elf army with the battalion box. I played a few games and liked it alot, but it was hard to find players. Throughout the year, I added to my army and now can play up to 2500 pts. Lately, there seems to be a lot more interest and I am hoping to play a lot more in 2012.

This year I started my foray into Warmachine. I started and expanded my Retribution of Scyrah army. It was definitely a steep learning curve and I struggled a lot at first trying to get a handle on the rules. However, the system is very well written, the Iron Kingdoms fluff is good, and the miniatures are fun to paint.

Our group dabbled a bit in the Deathwatch RPG. As an RPG veteran, I found the system a bit difficult to pick up. However, I did have fun running around as a Librarian killing stuff with mind bullets. I hope to get a chance to play this again.

Muggins spoke very highly of this game called "Necromunda". I was intrigued enough to pick up a Delaque gang and get it painted up. This game was a lot of fun and the campaign system is extremly cool for a miniature wargame. It felt cool to play "2nd edition" Warhammer 40k and probably saw a possible preview of rules that may be in 6th edition.

Last but not least, my Blood Angels army expanded. I bought a lot of Blood Angel models off of from Muggins. I got a fair amount painted, but still have a ways to go before it is fully painted. My Blood Angels army became my primary tournament army while my Tau remain my casual army for campaigns and pickup games. I am still evolving how best to play Blood Angels and want to get back to a jump pack army that I originally envisioned. However, I cannot argue with how fun and effective having a fast moving mechanized army can be on the table top.

I am really looking forward to more in 2012. We will be playing a Badab War campaign. Some new players will be picking up Fantasy armies. Supposedly a new Tau codex will appear in 2012 with corresponding new models. Oh, and 6th edition Warhammer 40k! Should be fun.

  1. Your Blood Angels 40k army and Retribution Warmachine armies look fantastic! I look forward to seeing your Warhammer Fantasy army painted to the same standard!
