Heroes of the Imperium Month - Primarch of of the IX Legion, Sanguinius

Greetings Fresh Coast Gaming Readers. Today I have the pleasure of presenting you my entry into the Heroes of the Imperium.

Sanguinius is the most beloved Primarch throughout the entire Imperium. No other primarch has as many shrines, temples and statues as he. While other Primarchs all shared one or a few particular traits of their father, Sanguinius alone had them all. Even the mighty Horus thought Sanguinius should have been Warmaster, and after his fall feared Sanguinius the most. It is no wonder why my fascination with him is so great. He is after all the Primarch of my beloved Blood Angels.

So without further adieu, I present my entry into Heroes of the Imperium.

It took me nearly a month to paint this model and at the end of it, it was nearly ruined. As I clear coated the model ash entered my window from a nearby neighbor burning garbage. It coated parts of the model with white specks. I cleaned up most of it, but have much cleanup to do. I definitely learned a valuable lesson to be mindful of your surroundings when clear coating.

This model, the Archangel from Scribor Miniatures was incredibly detailed and allowed me to try many techniques and really pushed my skills while painting. I intended this model to be Sanguinius, and I sure they did too. However they added some detail to it that didn't quite match the Blood Angels Primarch (To stave off copy right infringement no doubt). I had to modify the model to more accurately represent Sanguinius. For Starters I added the Halo behind Sanguinius's head. Additionally I removed any non BA insignia.

The model was primed in white and base coated using an airbrush for the appropriate colors.  I did a fair amount of airbrushing early on the model and quite frankly I think it looks impressive. Better yet, the airbrushing sped up the completion of the project significantly.

I tried as hard as I could to stay away from the whole wash the shit out the model technique but ended up doing that quite a bit regardless. However I did get to practice layering and was moderately surprised on how well it turned out. All the cloth on the model was painted with layering. Better yet I applied a layering technique I learned from a class with Justin from Secret Weapon miniatures on the demon's head. When painting Red, base coat it in blue and layer up. The man is really good at what he does, and he's really awesome to learn from. Everyone in the Greater Flint Area is really fortunate that he is coming here to teach classes soon. If you haven't heard about it please visit Gamers Sanctuary's Facebook Page.

Lastly I wanted to present to you all the different paints I used on this model. I never mixed paint and blended so much in my life but I think the end result was well worth it. Please let me know what you think of the model.

Thanks for reading.

  2. I'm glad you guys like it. After I painted it, I realized it is not a model to be played with. I think it is going in a showcase somewhere.
