Something Awful Painting Challenge - Oath Trek 2012

Particularly keen-eyed readers may have seen my occasional shoutouts to the Something Awful forums, or SA forum members. The SA forums are an interesting place to say the least, but their 40k and other gaming-related threads are some of the best resources on the net.

One of the long-running traditions there (going into year three, wow!) is the yearly painting oath thread. This year's thread is bigger and badder than ever!

Contemptor Month - Wrapping up

Wouldn't want to deal with that firing line!

Contemptor Month is all wrapped up here at Freshcoast 40k. Let's recap the fun.

Contemptor Month: Revered Brother Marius of the Mantis Warriors

I have to confess: I'm a super lazy painter. I cut corners so that things look battlefield quality so I can get the stuff knocked out quickly. I usually like to take more time on the important centerpiece models, though. This dreadnought took me a week and a half to paint off and on... at some points I got fed up with painting it, and painted some Hordes models.

DFG Adepticon Primer Tournament Wrap Up

On Saturday I played in Dark Future Games Adepticon Primer tournament held at Game Links in Fowlerville. OST did a great job running the tournament at Game Links which is in a great location for many players in the area. I was amazed that there were no Grey Knights at all (yay!). I think the tally was three Blood Angels, three Necrons, one Dark Angel, one Black Templar, one Ork, and one Chaos Daemon player. The Chaos Daemon player won the day.

Salamander Contemptor Dreadnought - Complete!

Salamanders Contemptor - Front View
Burn, baby burn.

I stayed up too late last night finishing my Salamanders Contemptor. This makes for painted dreadnought number eight. I...I think I may have a problem...

Contemptor Month - Blood Angels Dreadnought Finished

Blood Angel Contemptor with Dual Blood Talons
I finished up the painting on my Blood Angels Contemptor Dreadnought this week. I decided to make more work for myself by not using my airbrush this time. I wanted to try a brush paint layering technique to try and get a faded look for this ancient machine of war. Ultimately, I am happy with the end result even though it took a lot of thin layers of paint to achieve the faded color I wanted.

My First Battle Bunker: A View From Seattle

Upon arriving at a wonderful and exciting business conference in Seattle, I began searching for an LGS to satisfy my tabletop gaming nerdery. Lo and Behold... the state of Washington has a GW Battle Bunker!

Magnetizing the Contemptor: Fast and Dirty

As soon as I saw the Contemptor kit, I knew it would be a cinch to magnetize.

Brother Jeremiah Presents Blood Angel Honor Guard

Editor's Note: This was written by Brother Jeremiah and sent to me to post. As always we keep you in mind, Jeremy.

Greetings readers from half-way around the world.

It has been a long time since I've wrote an article for Fresh Coast 40k. There is good reason for this as I find myself deployed to Afghanistan. I don't find a lot of free time here from my duties but when I do I try to paint my 40k Models.

It has taken quite a few months but I finished my Blood Angels Honor Squad. When I conceived the idea for my Honor Squad, it was out of fun. I cannot imagine using these guys in a competitive list, but they sure look fun to play with. I hope you agree with me.

Contemptor Month: Mantis Warriors Build

When making a Forge World purchase, you have to consider all the options because you don't want to wait another month to get the pieces you forgot that you needed. This is especially true with contemptor dreadnoughts - they have a multitude of weapon options, including a missile launcher attached to the top!

Steampunk Saturday - Trolls keep on comin'

Short and sweet update today, wherein I post a couple of models I finished recently.

Contemptor Month: Salamanders Build Pics

I've finally finished the arduous building process on my Salamanders Contemptor. The intricacy of the kit allows for some great posing, but getting to the end product can be a challenge!

It always seems to be this way.  Every time I get into painting my marines, GW goes along and completely redesigns their paint selection!

Contemptor Month: Blood Angels Contemptor Assembled

Our Forge World order arrived late last week allowing me to get my Contemptor dreadnought assembled this past weekend. I was surprised at the lack of an instruction sheet. Assembly was fairly straightforward, but I did need to reference some photos online to figure out where some of the bits went.

Contemptor Month: Attention Neckbeards: Imperial Armour Stuff is A-OK

One of the contentious points about Contemptor Dreadnoughts is that they come from Imperial Armour, the set of books that Forge World has put out to support their models. These are 'non-standard' models that not everyone has access to, be it from lack of money or purchase method. There are a few reasons to hate on these rules and therefore never want to play against someone using them; there are a lot more great reasons to play with Imperial Armour models and rules.

Steampunk Saturday: Restart

I've had my painting bench back up for about 3 weeks and decided it was time to share the output from my latest paint slinging efforts. My apologies for the quality of the camera phone photos.

First up: Iron Lich Asphyxios

Then on to Lich Lord Venethrax:

My Armor is Contempt(or)

I guess I like dreadnoughts?!?

Finishing out Week 1 of Contemptor Month, I share some of my thoughts about contemptors in general, and sweet inspiration pics. Details after the jump.

Relocated and Ready

Michigan’s largest export in 2012? Engineers! I packed up my miniatures and moved to a new job designing hybrid vehicles In Utah. Since getting settled in I’ve begun exploring to find a new local game shop (LGS) for playing Warhammer, Warhammer 40k and Warmachine.

I, Contemptor

As a long time Battletech Tau player, my love of killer robots is well documented. At the time when I was considering another army to collect, the Blood Angels book was just about to hit the shelves. I knew I wanted something different to play than all shooting Tau. Like many, I had purchased Space Hulk and enjoyed it thoroughly. However, I was hesitant to start a marine army and be like everyone else. Eventually I gave in and went through the seven stages of marine army syndrome.

Contemptor Month - Chicken Soup for the Space Marine's Soul

Bustin' out.
I have to make a confession: before I saw the contemptor dreadnought in person, I didn't like it. At all. I thought it looked like a big space marine and was weirdly shaped with curves everywhere.

It's a Love/Contempt Thing.

I thought I would kick off our "Month of Contempt" with a general homage to the model that still inspires and thrills us all; the Space Marine Dreadnought!

The Time of Beasts is at Hand - 2nd Place!

Bray Shaman Abramio called his herd forward
As stated in the previous blog article, Tau4Eva and I attended the Warhammer Fantasy tournament at Gamers Sanctuary yesterday. I used the list I posted on Friday which included the Herdstone. I was a little scared to use it because I wasn't sure I would use it correctly. I also included the Jagged Dagger, which allows me to grab power dice for each model my Great Bray kills in close combat. He cut down a ton of dudes... my magic phases were well powered.

WHFB Tournament - Tau4eva takes 3rd place!

Mike and I attended the WHFB Adepticon primer tournament at GS this past weekend. There were a total of twelve players including a few that are planning to play in Chicago for the upcoming fantasy tournament at Adepticon - sounds like a lot of fun. I would love to make the trip next year. Hopefully by then I will meet the fully painted army requirement. Saturday's tournament used scenarios from the 2011 tournament with a 2200 point army limit. Here's the Dark Elf list I brought:

Steampunk Saturday - Earthborn Dire Troll

After a break last week, Steampunk Saturday is back with one of my favorite sculpts in the entire Privateer Press range: the Earthborn Dire Troll!

EBDT wants to eat your face.

Fantasy Friday: Ready for the Weekend

Prep for this weekend's tournament at Gamers Sanctuary is coming to an end. I've painted all I can paint in time for tomorrow morning; I've built all the movement trays necessary. I've gone through iteration after iteration of list (not necessarily to min / max, since I have some uncompetitive stuff... I feel the list is solid outside my Minotaurs).
